The liver is like your body’s filter that cleans your body from toxins and heavy metals. If we don’t have a healthy liver there could be a toxicity load in our body. Here are some examples of what factors can affect our liver, our detoxification pathways and perfect tips to improve it.

We have many detoxification pathways like our skin, kidneys, lymphatic system, liver, lungs, etc. All these organs work together to eliminate toxins, alcohol, caffeine, beauty products, medicines, etc. There are times when the body becomes saturated when there is an excess of these.

Here are some tips to improve detoxification:

  1. Add Healthy Whole Foods To Your Diet

You don’t need fancy and expensive juices to have a healthy liver, you can add some foods that will improve your liver function: garlic, celery, citrus fruits, bone broth, beet, green tea, broccoli sprouts, salmon, fermented foods, etc. Try to reduce inflammatory foods such as refined sugars, unhealthy fats, packaged foods, preservatives, additives, etc.

  2. Eat Potassium Rich Foods

Optimal amounts of potassium can promote a healthy liver function: bananas, spinach, avocado, sweet potato, etc.

  3. Drink Filtered Water

Your liver and kidney work together to move toxins from your bloodstream and turn them into water-soluble substances transported in your urine. But what is important here is not only the quantity of water you drink, but also the quality. There are some contaminated with toxins, there we are giving more toxic load to our liver and kidneys and that is why it is important to drink it filtered. If you would like to know how much water you need, multiply your weight in kg x 0.033. This will be the litres of water you need per day and try to drink a little more when you exercise.

  4. Try to reduce as many toxins as possible

There are many factors that intoxicate our body and some are impossible to avoid, however by being aware of them I know you can make some changes. These are caffeine, cigarettes, alcohol, beauty products, mercury amalgams, large fish such as tuna, medicines, contaminated water, etc. I always recommend to my patients that instead of using a commercial moisturiser for the body, they exchange it for a natural coconut or almond oil.

  5. Sweat!

Sweating will not only bring out endorphins, it is a way to eliminate toxins. It is a very important way of detoxification and it also makes you feel amazing!

  6. Try to sleep in a completely dark room

As I mentioned before, the circadian rhythm is key to good sleep hygiene, by having some light in the room our melatonin will not be optimal since we can secrete cortisol causing us to be awake.

  7. Eat foods rich in magnesium

Magnesium has more than 300 functions in the body, including relaxing the muscles. Eating foods rich in magnesium will help you sleep soundly through the night. Foods such as spinach, chard, almonds, quinoa, chocolate, etc.

Happy Detoxing! :)
